The “packaging paradox”: packaging is the activity of temporarily integrating an external function and a product to enable the use of the product. For food this mostly implies closing everything off perfectly and ensuring that nobody can open the pack, until the final consumer would like to open it easily and safely. On the other hand, EU legislators are introducing appropriate measures combined in the SUP (Single Use Plastic) EU Directive 2019/204. Among such measures, specific requirements for beverage bottles and their caps are introduced due to the fact that they are the most polluting products (e.g., they can easily detach from their containers and be lost through distraction).

To ensure that the caps on beverage containers no longer get lost so easily and end up as waste in the environment, precise regulations are currently being drawn up regarding the technical design of these caps.
Working on Packaging Design, how can a new system to open and close containers address these issues? This challenge deals with new standards in food packaging in order to facilitate our way to easily open and close, establishing further packaging developments that improve accessibility to all users including the ageing global population.
